Thanks for providing such a great service. I am currently looking for a place to host my zones coming from Cloudflare, and came across this option.
Main reason for me to switch is that I want to become more independent from US services due to the recent geopolitical situations, and also I want to try using more European alternatives (not only DNS but also many other aspects).
I see that deSEC is currently using .io and .org for its nameservers, one being run by a US non-profit, the other run by a US company, therefore both de-facto under control of the US government.
My question is wouldn’t it be a good idea to rather use European TLDs for a European DNS service? Like either replacing one of them with a European option such as .de, .ch, .li, .lu, .eu, .es, .is, .no, .co.uk or whatever or add 1-2 on top to the existing ones so that we don’t have a single point of failure there?
Indeed, this is pretty good idea. When we started, we looked into desec.de and desec.eu, both of which were already taken; we then went for .io and .org as you know.
Thinking about this again after a few years, we would like to acknowledge the supreme DNSSEC service provided by some European registries, specifically those offering DS automation (which are: .se, .cz, .ch/.li, and .sk), and at the same time provide authoritative DNS service under these TLDs.
For this reason, we have just registered desec.{ch,cz,li} (as dictated by availability). DNS service is not yet available under these domains, but we’ll make a plan how exactly to do it – it probably won’t take too long before you’ll hear more!
This is a great idea, and I’m glad to see some domains already registered. @peter, is there already a timeline for this, and will there be the option for existing deSEC accounts to migrate their nameservers to the European domains?
